It is many people's dream to have a nice and modern deck in their houses. Whether it is as a second story deck or a brand new deck in their gardens, decks are one of my favorite "spaces" to spend some good quality time with my family. As an architect, I firmly believe that you will be better off by investing more in your common areas than in your private areas such as your bedroom.

1) A pressure treated lumber, widely known as the PT lumber. This is one of the most common solutions for many houses in the United States. It is preferably cheap as a low cost solution and widely available for use anywhere, which are important factors to make it an excellent choice for householders or builders. Safety issues are also concerned and taken care of by treating PT lumber with ACQ chemicals instead of the old CCA chemicals, which are a bit more dangerous.
2) Cedar and redwood: another great choice as a decking material, these wood types will offer you a comfortable feel and look that only true wood can offer you. It does, sometimes, comes with a higher price tag. Wood tends to be stronger and more resistant to decay in its core which might cost you a bit more. But if you can spend a bit more, this is definitely a good choice!
3) Tropical hardwoods: ranging from ipe, tigerwood to and red tauari, tropical hardwoods might be another good choice to have for your modern deck.
Like the previous choice, it is a bit more expensive than a pressure treated lumber but it usually compares to a redwood and cedar woods. It's definitely one of the hardest and most resistant woods that you will find and for that same reason, this is a wood type that usually uses some sort of hidden fastener on its edges.

They are also great solutions and although I'm not very fond of their look and feel - nothing replaces a natural looking redwood - they are definitely worth looking.
